Key biblical guidelines for developing a loving, healthy marriage

Ten key biblical guidelines for developing a loving, healthy marriage

  1. Think commitment for life – do not even entertain the thought of finding a way out of a difficult marriage relationship – remember marriage is founded upon a covenant to be faithful for life
  2. Pray together, and also find ways to encourage one another to keep growing in your relationship with Christ – the closer you both grow to Jesus, the closer and more fulfilled you will be in your relationship with one another
  3. Work hard in helping each another to obey your God-given roles – show mutual love, respect and submission for one another (see Ephesians 5:22-28,33; Colossians 3:18-19)
  4. Confess your sins and failings to one another, seeking forgiveness and reconciliation – forgive freely, refusing to hold grudges (Colossians 3:12-14), and a bitter spirit lest it grow up and spread its poison in your relationship (Hebrews 12:15)
  5. Do not hold on to negative thoughts towards your husband or wife – train yourself to see the positive, and to think positive thoughts concerning your life’s partner (Philippians 4:8)
  6. Be humble – keep repenting daily of self-centredness and pride – learn to hate these sins because of their potential to seriously harm, even destroy, a healthy and mutually satisfying marriage
  7. Esteem your partner in your heart – express your esteem through words of thanks, affirmation and praise
  8. Communicate your desires, needs and burdens openly and honestly to one another – listen sincerely to your partner’s concerns rather than just wanting to air your own
  9. Be romantic, disciplined and creative in your expressions of sexual intimacy and affection
  10. Serve one another by helping each other with daily chores, and if appropriate, also with work tasks – aim to partner together in your various tasks, activities and hobbies
  11. Have fun and laugh together
